Amrita TV’s Vishu Specials

As Vishu arrives, bathing the State  in the auspicious yellow of the konnapoo, Amrita TV prepares a bouquet of  Kani programmes for its viewers.

The   day begins on a lyrical note with Kavithayude Kaineettam, that  gifts its viewers with exquisite compositions in verse from the best bards of Malayalam, ONV,  SugathaKumari and Madhusudhanan Nair, who recite their own poems, recounting their Vishu reminiscences through the fluid grace of rhymes at  7.30 am.

In Aksharangalude Vishukkani at  8.30 am, gliding gently down the tranquil waters of the Bharatapuhza, noted writer C.Radhakrishnan explains to Alamcode Leelakrishnan, the actual significance of this  ancient agrarian festival commemorating the birth of the Malayalam New Year; paints a verbal picture of the event as it was celebrated in all its splendor and richness 50 years ago; describes the profusion of rituals and rites associated with the fete, that has since shrunk into a kani and a kaineettam.

Providing a musical interlude,  Pattinte  Kaineetam gives a windfall of the best foot tapping numbers from the top grossers of Vishu at  10 am.

New Releases , a detailed rundown of the Vishu movie scene, where blockbusters and shoe stringers clash for collections at the box-office: Mayamohini, Dileep’s full-length female makeover, as the seductive Mohini; comedy thriller Cobra that sees Mammoootty teaming with Lal for the 1st time; Thiruvambadi Thamban with Jayaram as an elephant contractor; Ashiq Abu’s eagerly awaited 22 Female Kottayam with g Rima Kallingal and Fahad Fazil in the lead and so on will follow at  10.30 am

At 11.30 am, Sauhridathinte Vishukkani  crosses over into Tamilnadu to beard superstar Sharath Kumar in his own lair, in Thenkassi where he is the lord of all he surveys. He talks at length about his political ambitions, film career, the challenges thrown up the most difficult role of his cinematic life, that of the hijda in ‘Kanchana’, in which the alpha male with his muscular frame had to look dainty and feminine.

An hour long exuberant Goan carnival, Mathapum Poothiriyum at 12 noon , stops by Saji Surendran’s ‘Husband’s in Goa’, a romcom that is being shot into shape on location, on
3 decamping husbands who cut loose from their wives and live it up in Goa. Together, the TV team and the film crew paint the town red, hitting the top destinations and the hot spots: in between there is fun n’ frolic on the beaches with Lal, Indrajith, Jayasuriya, Asif Ali and Rima Kallingal in top form; camaraderie and high spirits when Sarayu interviews the 3 ‘husbands’; interactions with the director and cameraman that reveals juicy behind- the-scenes stories and so on.

Manthrikante Vishukkani slated for 2 pm, spends this Vishu in the company of Jayaram and Ramesh Pisharadi in Coorg on the sets of the comic horror flick, ‘Manthrikan’.
Exchanging their ‘supernatural’ experiences, Jayaram recalls how he arrived at the film location –an ancient palace- late after midnight, was shown to his room by the caretaker who helpfully informed the sleepy actor that the owner’s wife had committed suicide in the very spot not long ago and Jayaram suddenly found himself very wide awake ….

The Vishu special movie, Orma Mathram is a realistic depiction of the trauma undergone by a young couple, whose only son is reported missing in a bomb blast in their vicinity. Dileep portrays with sombre ease, the harrowing ordeal of the father caught in the dilemma of  not knowing whether his son is dead or lost, in one of the best performances of his career. Supported by Manoj K Jayan, Dhanya Mary Varghese, Nedumudi Venu, Lalu Alex etc the film will be aired at 2.30pm.

Heroyude Pattu Visheshangal at  7.00pm looks in on the sets of the latest Prithviraj starrer ‘Hero’, for which the youth idol has crooned  a song and danced to his own tune .Prithvi, an actor by choice became a singer by chance when Deepak Dev urged him to take up the microphone for ‘Puthiya Mukham’; in Hero, where he plays a stunt master, Prithvi gets his 2nd outing in playback in the song  ‘Tarzan Antony Coming Back to Cinema’. During the interview in which director Deepan, lyricist Shibu Chakravarthy and Music Director Gopi Sunder also chip in, he reveals how he became a singing star, how the song was little rehearsed but well sung, the picturisation of the number costarring Yamee Gautam etc.

Movie Bazar at  7.30 pm is devoted to a coverage of the audio release of  Mohanlal’s forthcoming cop story, Grandmaster,  a lavish  function attended by its complete cast and crew.

With the beginning of the two month long annual mid-summer holidays, children who have been delivered from the daily grind of school and homework, find time beginning to hang heavily on their hands.

Edgar  Rice Burrough’s Tarzan, one of literature’s best known characters narrates the story of the ape-man born in Africa and adopted by a she ape; Malgudi Days is a series based on R.K Narayan’s renowned work that gives an account of the daily exploits of
10- year old Swami and his friends in the quaint little town of Malgudi.

The live-action visualization of unforgettable literary masterpieces that will give its young viewers a taste of the world’s timeless classics, has been dubbed into Malayalam for better understanding.

Asin In ETC Bollywood Business on ETC,28th March at 8:30 PM

Asin Thottumkal on ETC Bollywood Business
“Sajid bahut frustrated hai…itne heroines ko ek sath daal ke bhi, ek bhi cat fight dekhne ko nahi mila unko.” Asin Thottumkal On 28th March, Wednesday at 8:30 PM on ETC
Mumbai, 26thth March: Contrary to popular belief that B town actresses cannot be friends, Housefull 2 stars actor Asin Thottumkal has been bonding pretty well with Jacqueline Fernandez lately. Komal Nahta gets into a conversation on ETC Bollywood Business with the two sizzling beauties, Asin and Jacqueline to figure out what went wrong…ooops right…
Explaining this new twist that Bollywood witnessed; Asin said, “We bonded really well off screen, however on screen we played characters that are at each others throats. We really could not get into a fight with each other. For us to get into our character Sajjid asked us to pull each others hair, throttle each others neck. Most of the times, Sajid (Khan) would lose his head about our friendship. He really had to struggle to make us fight in the film since she and I would end up giggling on most occasions.”
Adding to the conversation, Jacqueline said, “My first scene was with her, where we were supposed to have a cat fight. I didn’t know how to do it; I was so doubtful and reserved. Things like… should I touch her or not kept cropping up in my mind.”
Taking a playful dig on Sajid at this, Asin uttered, “Sajid bahut frustrated hai, because itne zyada heroine ko ek sath daal ke bhi, ek bhi cat fight dekhne ko nahi mila unko.”
Talking about behind the camera action, Jacqueline said, “I didn’t get any narration. I had no idea about the role. Every day, when I went to the sets, I didn’t know what my scenes were.”
Housefull 2 is directed by Sajid Khan and is a sequel to the 2010 release of the same name. The film will see veterans Randhir Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor, Boman Irani and Mithun Chakraborty sharing the screen space with actors Akshay Kumar, Asin Thottumkal, John Abraham, Zarine Khan, Jacqueline Fernandez, Riteish Deshmukh and Shreyas Talpade.
This is just a glimpse of a spicy conversation. To get your hands on the entire gossip tune in to ETC Bollywood Business on ETC on 28th March, Wednesday at 8:30 PM.

Snehita: New Program on Amrita TV

A show devoted entirely to the fairer sex, Amrita TV’s Snehita takes up the role of a  staunch friend  to provide advice, instructions  and inspiration to women from all walks of life, on issues that crop up in the female dimension of the world. One of  the premier programmes to explore the problems of parenting from the subjective viewpoint of the mother, Snehita, to  be launched on March 26th  , will be telecast Monday to Friday at 12.30 noon.

Nudging  womenkind  to realization on her dormant capabilities and giving guidance on problems that confront her at home and in the workplace, Snehita equips the modern femme to face up to the challenges in everyday life, while at the same time gender sensitizing society on the awesome potential of Eve power.

The programme is carved  into a number  of segments that offer tips, furnishes counsel   or shows the way on topics that engage, fascinate  or appeal to the better half of humanity.

Each episode opens its account with a segment earmarked for tackling a topic that is of absorbing interest to any mother-parenting. Motherhood may be the pinnacle of  a woman’s life, but it is one of the toughest jobs on earth. From the moment the little bundle of gurgles and giggles is brought home, to the time he flies the nest, the mother is plagued by doubts and predicaments. The questions that loom large in her mind as she nurses him through  infancy, childhood, pre-teens and adolescence are dealt with in the form of an 8 minute interview with a guest, who  is an expert on the question of the day: how much quality time should one spent with the child; should there be separate rules for boys and girls; how does one handle sibling rivalry; how to cope with puberty problems ;what is the role of  the father in bringing up the girl child; where does one draw the line between disciplining and love etc.

Healthy Foods which follows, stirs through another subject that is dear to every dame’s heart – cooking. This 7 minute section presents a menuful of quick and tasty recipes, which can be dished up in a trice, is easy on the mother, yummy to the child and above all packed with health and nourishment.

The final segment hosts random, disparate themes all focusing on issues feminine, which may be on subjects in her sphere or profiles in inspiration on woman achievers, well known or unsung.

Ever since woman refused to bow to gender tyranny and strode from the hearth to the boardroom, she has willingly shouldered greater responsibilities and taken up newer roles. The final section educates her on how to respond to new challenges in her horizon: smart ways of investing money, ways to rein in the household budget, efficient management of time, starting a business venture from home base, the  secret of looking well-groomed, finding place for leisure in her crammed schedule and so on.

The segment  may at intervals also feature females extraordinaire, role models who set shining examples to follow. They may be either dynamic, enterprising careerists with
sigh-worthy jobs on the top rungs of their profession, who dared to go where no woman had ventured before and changed the rules of the work place for ever. Or just ordinary females who became exceptional by an act of courage or strength of character such as one who turned down her groom at the alter for demanding dowry; who warded off a molester and talked about the encounter, braving social stigma; one who defied precedence and protocol to take bold official decisions etc.

In an age when society unreasonably pegs the woman to the traditional submissive,
self sacrificing Sati Savithri straitjacket ,while simultaneously expecting her to be the ideal wife, supermom, champion home maker and successful careerist , Snehita like a true friend provides a pillar of support, cushioning  her  against the disconcerting pressures while
rousing her to her full potential .

With this world record, Zee TV's brand positioning 'Umeed Se Saje Zindagi' resounded strongly with its mission to entertain, educate and inspire its viewers!
Nearly 10000 people had already filled their entries online to rehearse the dance step while thousands more thronged the grounds be a part of this historical moment even before the doors opened at KJ Somaiya College Grounds,(Ghatkopar). The Masters, Terence Lewis and Remo D'Souza, along with DID Season 3 Terrific 13 contestants led the crowd through a rendition of 'Dhinkachika Dhinkachika'.  The participants were invited through a free of cost registration process and received a quick two-hour dance lesson from the three Masters before doing the final jig in front of the Guinness officials.
Once the participants were schooled in these moves, the official attempt began.  The previous record was 1336 participants, set by Master Terence in Mumbai in 2011. And, to break that record a head count of more than 1336 participants were expected to dance for three minutes in unison. The Masters had a challenging task to teach the teeming thousands of dance enthusiasts to gyrate on a Bollywood number in a single file for 3 minutes. DID anchor, the gorgeous  Saumya Tandon, cheered and rooted for the participants who were rehearsing for hours to get the moves right.
The decibel level at the venue skyrocketed when Mr. Nikhil Shukla, the official adjudicator from Guinness, went up on stage and announced that Zee TV has successfully broken the record for the largest Bollywood dance at one place. The sheer number sounds daunting and achieving the feat was nothing less than exhilarating for everyone present! The energy was electric and after the record was broken, the crowds who participated to make the record attempt a success were treated to an entertaining concert by the fabulous Dance India Dance Season 3's Terrific 13 - Sanam Johar, Mohena Singh, Vaibhav Ghughe, Neerav Bavlecha, Raghav Juyal, Sneha Gupta, Piyali Saha, Rajasmitha Kar, Abhik Bau, Paul Marshall and Pradeep Gurung.

Dance India Dance as an iconic brand has set new benchmarks in the realms of reality programming. The superlative talent that the current DID Season 3 has is unmatched on Indian television. This new Guinness World Record will definitely go down in history and we can only promise that DID as a brand will only get bigger and better!” added ZEEL Head Marketing, National Channels, Mr. Akash Chawla.
The Masters could not believe that they along with enthusiastic dance lovers had created history. Terence Lewis, stumped at having broken his own record by a huge margin, said, “This has been one of the happiest moments of my life. I feel like dancing to Oops I did it again (grins).”  An ecstatic Master Remo said, “Wow!!! I had never experienced such frenzy and huge crowds! The record breaking attempt is going to be etched in my memory forever and I've gone hoarse screaming that my show, Dance India Dance has set a Guinness World Record! The impressive efforts of all the participants present here proves that there's no bigger brand for dance in India than Dance India Dance. Amrita TV’s Sandhya Deepam To Include The Quintessence Of ‘ Devi Mahatmyam’

From its March 8th edition, the episodes of Amrita TV’s Sandya Deepam will feature philosophical interpretations of the sacred slokas of Devi Mahatmyam, a magnificent discourse in Sanskrit, narrating the epic tale of Mahadevi, the Mother Goddess.
The tantric expert L.Gireeshan will offer insights into the significance of the divine text, its hidden messages and mystic symbolism, in the Jyothirgamaya segment of Sandhya Deepam which is telecast everyday of the week at 6.30pm.

Devi Mahatmyam takes the place of Lalitha Sahasranamam, another ancient text lauding the glory of the Divine Mother and enumerating the thousand names of Lalithambika, which had been telecast for 1114 continuous episodes of Sandhya Deepam.
A part of Markandeya Purana, Devi Mahatmyam is a compilation of 700 verses in chaste Sanskrit, believed to have been composed 1500 years ago by Ved Vyas and translated into Malayalam by Mahakavi Ezhthachan.

Said to have been narrated by Sage Markandeya to Sage Baghuni, Devi Mahatmyam chronicles the martial exploits of the Adi Sakthi - how she overcame Madhu and Kaidabha in her tamasic form, Goddess Durga; killed the demon Mahishasura in her rajashic character as Goddess Lekshmi and slew the Asura brothers Shumbha and Nishumba in her Sathivic avatar, Goddess Saraswathi. Devi Mahatmyam’s distinction lies in the fact that it is the only text which depicts the Goddess in all her three primal manifestations, each presiding over a specific guna- Maha Kali, Maha Lekshmi and Maha Saraswathi.
The mere possession of the text Devi Mahatmyam , literally the Glory of the Goddess, is said to be propitious to the owner, helping him to hold evil spirits at bay. Kalluru Namboothiri who was ordered by Sakthan Thampuran to enter the inner sanctum of the Kodungaloor Devi Ksethra in the dead of the night to retrieve a ring he had lost, armed himself with a copy of Devi Mahatmyam to muster up enough courage. It is widely accepted that those who recite the holy hymns or mantras or even hear it being chanted are sure of having their wishes fulfilled. Repeated readings will yield greater benefits: perusing it 3 times will wipe away the effects of evil spells, 11 times will subjugate the fear of death, 18 times will endow one with occult powers etc. The sublime grandeur of its verses is not just a scriptural account of the Goddess’ triumph over her demonic foes, but an eulogy in praise of the majestic power of female divinity identified with the Life Force itself.

Amrita TV’s Udayamritham Accomplishes A Landmark 2500 Episodes

Udayamritham, Amrita TV’s standard bearing morning show will ink its way to a historic 2500 continuous episodes on February 18th ,en route to drafting  more momentous milestones in future. Amrita TV’s curtain raiser to the day that appears at sun-up Monday through Sunday at 6.30 am every morning, has been telecast non-stop from the day of the channel’s launch and is the longest running  TV programme in Malayalam today.

Covering each State in turn, Udayamritham travels over the entire  sweep of the sub- continent, halting at sites that bear the footprints of history or are the embodiment of  our culture . It braids together the legends, myths and folklore surrounding the palaces where the whispers of the past still echo, forts that have withstood the siege of challengers, tombs that are memorials to men who controlled the destinies of nations and regional monuments which are the archetype  of architectural trends, to present a picture of our cultural heritage and ancestral legacy in its totality.

Each of the 2500 episodes portrays a fresh slice of history, covering a new memorial or location; Udayamritham has never gone over the same ground twice.

The programme has achieved many distinctions during its 6 year long odyssey: it is the first programme in Malayalam to transport viewers to the holiest pilgrimage centres of Haridwar and Rishikesh; an exclusive Gandhi Jayanthi episode shot in the Mahatma’s ashram became the first Malayalam show to cover the Sabarmathi Ashram and Porbunder. It found a permanent place of honour in the Limca Book of Records twice in a row for the longest recorded single  shot in television history, a 55  minute uninterrupted take in 2006 ,which was bettered the next year with a  155 minute marathon effort.

The Government recognized the show’s undisputed merit by bestowing accolades in the Annual State Awards, for compeering, videography and production.

Udayamritham, which millions of Malayalees wake up to, at cockcrow everyday of the year, continues with its quest to connect us with our cultural roots, probing into destinations located far and near  to unearth the unrecorded pages of previous history.

Amrita TV To Launch Mega Serial On Padmanabha Swamy Temple

Sreepadmanabham, Amrita TV’s new mega serial,  is a historical drama that circumnavigates the Padmanabhaswamy temple of Travancore, the richest shrine in the world and depicts the fascinating tale of its past , by deftly braiding together authentic historical incidents, spiritual beliefs and mythical lore associated with the kshethra.

Directed by eminent film director Suresh Unnithan , the serial’s credit list stars some of the most  celebrated names in the TV acting echelon  such as Devan, Mohan Sharma, ‘Nivedhyam’ Padmakumar, Praveena, Ambika, Sreelekshmi, Shalu Menon, Maya Moushmi, Reshmi Boban, Sharath, Sonu etc. To be launched on January 26th , it will be telecast Monday to Friday at 9.30pm.

The programme picks up the thread at the critical juncture of Thripadidanam, wherein  Marthanda Varma, wearied by the domestic unrest sprouting all over Travancore, surrenders his kingdom at the feet of  the deity and vows to rule thenceforth as Padmanabha Dasa, the slave of the Lord. Miraculously, the rebellion subsides and peace reigns over the  province. On this occasion, the grateful monarch discloses the ancient folklore about the temples’ origin to his nephew and crown prince,  Karthika Thirunal Rama Varma.

According to the legend, Viluamangalathu Swamiyar, the priest of the Anathapuram Temple in Kasargode prayed incessantly for a divya darshan and the Lord appeared before him in the guise of a boy. The Swamiyar followed him into the Anandankadu where He revealed himself in his reclining posture, in all His majesty. The temple  was created on that very spot under the patronage of the ruler of Travancore.

Portrayed in dramatic detail and re splendid  in the colorful costumes of the times, the narrative chronicles all the highpoints in the history of the temple from the periods of  Ravivarma Kulasekhara to Chittira Thirunal –the development of the Ettarayogam council who controlled the temple’s administration , the clashes between the King and the Pottis of the council over its management, the emergence of the Ettuveetil Pillamar  as the overlords of the 8 provinces of the kingdom and who became more powerful than the monarch and conspired to kill the king; how the king managed to escape the assassination attempts by the skin of his teeth ; the rites  and rituals special to the temple; the unwavering faith of the devotees in the powers of the deity, the lives of the artisans dependent on the temple for their livelihood –are all woven  into the fabric of the tale to present a credible and engrossing depiction of  the  bygone age.

Without distorting history or needlessly exaggerating mythical beliefs, Sreepadmanabham gives spiritual gratification to the devout  and accurate facts to the curious by its re-enactment of real historical events.

In spite of its almost iconic status, not many know much about  the shrine’s antecedents. Strangely enough no real attempt has been made till date in the visual medium to tap into the narrative possibilities of the subject. Sreepadmanabham is virtually the first television endeavor to recount the tale of the temple, that is so intertwined with the history of princely Travancore and the erstwhile royal family.
